Signing in and accounts

Sign in with your Mendeley or Zotero account so Rectoly can read your library. You can add several accounts and switch between them.

Applies to Mendeley and Zotero editions Windows · Mac · iPad Free

  1. Press the sign-in button:
    • Mac · iPadThe sign-in button in the library sidebar (Sign in with Mendeley or Sign in with Zotero), or the button on the last introduction page.
    • WindowsThe sign-in button on the welcome screen or in the empty library, or Settings › Accounts.
  2. The Mendeley or Zotero sign-in page opens.
    • Windows · Mac · iPadIt opens in your browser.
  3. Sign in on that page and allow Rectoly to access your library. Rectoly never shows a password field of its own and never sees your password.
  4. WindowsWhen the browser says Signed in to Rectoly, close the tab and return to Rectoly.
  5. The library starts syncing. See Syncing the library.

Zotero editionThe Zotero edition gets its access key from this sign-in; there is no screen for typing an API key by hand.

Where your accounts are

  • Mac · iPadThe account row at the bottom of the library sidebar opens the account sheet.
  • WindowsSettings › Accounts.

Your accounts are listed there; the one in use is marked Active.

Add another account

  1. Open your accounts (above) and choose Add account.
  2. Sign in with the other Mendeley or Zotero account.

If the sign-in page signs you straight back into the first account, sign out of Mendeley or Zotero in the browser first, then try again.

Each account keeps its own library, downloaded PDFs and annotations on the device.

Switch accounts

  • Mac · iPadTap a saved account.
  • WindowsClick Switch next to the account.

Mac · iPadBefore switching, Rectoly sends annotations that haven't been sent yet ("Preparing to switch accounts"). If some cannot be sent, you can Continue switching; they stay on this device with that account.

Sign out

  1. Start signing out:
    • Mac · iPadIn the account sheet, press Sign out (for the account in use). On iPad you can also swipe left on a saved account.
    • WindowsIn Settings › Accounts, click Sign out next to the account.
  2. Choose what happens to the account's downloaded PDFs and annotations on this device:
    • Mac · iPadSign out and keep them or Sign out and delete them.
    • WindowsSign out, keep downloaded papers or Sign out and delete its papers from this PC.

If you keep them, signing in again with the same account picks up where you left off. Your Mendeley or Zotero account itself and everything in the cloud are not affected either way.

Annotations that were never sent are deleted if you choose to delete the data. Let them sync first, or export them (see Archives).

Purchases and accounts

The trial and the purchase belong to your Mendeley or Zotero account, not to the device. Sign in with the same account on each device to use them there. See Trial and purchase.

If sign-in does not work

  • Windows"Sign-in was cancelled": you closed the page or declined access. Start again.
  • Windows"Could not sign in": check your internet connection and try again.
  • WindowsMendeley edition"Another app is using port 8765, which Mendeley sign-in needs": close the other app that uses that port and try again.
  • WindowsIf the browser tab says Sign-in did not complete, return to Rectoly and try again.
