AI

The power of AI, inside Rectoly — on the iPad itself

After the reading comes the slow part: sorting what you noted, and writing up what each paper does. Rectoly 5.1 hands both to an AI that runs on the iPad in your hands. It never writes a word of your notes, every sentence it writes about a paper points to the page it came from, and nothing leaves the device — unless you decide to bring your own API key.

How it works

See it in use

01

Your notes, grouped by topic

Open Across papers, choose a collection or your whole library, and press Organize with AI. The notes you wrote — comments on highlights, sticky notes, text boxes — are grouped under headings by topic. The AI writes only the headings; every note stays exactly as you wrote it, with its paper and page, and a tap opens the paper at that place.

02

Saved as a research theme

Press Save as a research theme and the result is an ordinary theme: rename the headings, move a note the AI misplaced, add sentences of your own, and export it to Markdown or Word with a reference list — or, in the Zotero edition, send it to Zotero as a note. A note that fits no heading is not dropped; it waits under a heading of its own.

03

One card per paper

Choose Paper cards… in the library’s “…” menu and pick the papers. For each one, the AI writes out the research question, method, data, findings and the limitations the authors state — from the paper’s own text, in the paper’s own language. Each sentence ends with its page; tap it and the paper opens on the paragraph it cites.

04

A literature review table, one row per paper

Open the table and the cards line up: a row per paper, five columns, a page on every sentence. Export it as Markdown and CSV for your spreadsheet. In the Zotero edition, each page is a link that opens the PDF there in Zotero, and every card can be saved to its paper as a Zotero note, where the plugins and tools that read Zotero can find it.

05

Checked against the text

The AI writes from the paper’s paragraphs; Rectoly then checks every sentence against them. A sentence with a claim or a number that is not in the paragraphs it cites is dropped, and the card says how many were. Stated limitations holds only what the authors themselves wrote. A field the paper does not state stays empty rather than guessed.

On the iPad — or with your own key

Everything runs on this iPad with the same 2.5 GB model translation uses, downloaded once. Your notes and your papers are not sent anywhere. On an iPad that cannot run the model, or if you want a stronger one, choose Your own API key in Settings › AI — OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, an OpenAI-compatible server, or Ollama or LM Studio on your own network. Rectoly says what will be sent and asks first.

When you'd use it

Where it fits in your day

Writing the related work

The review table, before the writing

Card the papers in the collection and the table is the first draft of your literature review matrix: what each paper asked, how, on what data, what it found and what it admits. Every cell leads back to a page.

Fifty notes across twenty papers

Your own notes, finally in order

The notes you left while reading are grouped by topic and saved as a theme, so the shape of your argument is there before you start writing — in your own words, not the AI’s.

A paper under review, or unpublished data

AI help that stays on the iPad

The model runs on the device. A manuscript you are reviewing, or a draft nobody has seen, is organized and carded without going to any AI service — unless you choose your own key, and then you are told exactly what goes.

The details

Writes only the headings
Organize with AI names the topics and sorts your notes under them. It does not change a character of a note, and a note that fits nowhere goes under Notes under no heading instead of disappearing. The headings are written in the language most of your notes are in.
Every sentence carries its page
A card’s sentence names the paragraph and page it rests on, and the card quotes the passages it cites, so you can check it without opening the PDF — or tap and open the paper there.
What the check can and cannot do
The check removes content and numbers that are not in the cited paragraphs. It cannot prove that a sentence reads its paragraph correctly. Where it matters, open the page.
The same model as translation
One download of about 2.5 GB, from Rectoly’s own servers, serves translation, Organize with AI and paper cards, and runs offline from then on. An iPad or iPhone needs 8 GB of memory or more to run it; a card made on another device is shown on any device.
Your own API key
Choose Your own API key in Settings › AI and the paragraphs and notes go from the iPad straight to the provider you choose — never through Rectoly’s server. The key is stored on this device only, the provider bills you, and Rectoly asks before anything is sent, with an estimate of how much.
Cards travel with the paper
While handwriting sharing with Zotero or Mendeley is on, the card of a paper in your personal library is saved with that paper’s handwriting and appears in Rectoly on your other devices, even one that has no model.
Cards for new papers, if you like
Turn on Also make cards for new papers and each paper that arrives on this iPad gets a card, while the iPad is charging and not warm.
Included in the purchase
Organize with AI and paper cards are part of the app you bought, and free during the 14-day trial. There is no chat screen and no per-use fee; with your own API key, the provider’s charges are yours.
Where the AI is not offered
In some regions and stores the settings have no AI, and your own API key cannot be used there.
